Crushers

Many of the crushers - designed by Krupp - created for the Oil sands in Fort McMurray, were detailed by M&D Drafting and fabricated by Waiward Steel Fabricators. The crushers, semi-mobile plants used to crush and pulverize large rocks and minerals into manageable sizes for conveyor transport, represented an enormous challenge to our steel detailing expertise, experience and ingenuity. A challenge met by incorporating all the tools within Tekla structures, and the use of sub-assembly / super-assembly drawings.

The weight of one crusher is approximately 916 tons with much of the material being complex plate work requiring intricate complete penetration welding. Detailing a crusher also required a great deal of coordination as it contains many moving parts and many parts in general. A sub assembly drawing of one of the apron feeders, for example, contained over 2000 parts.

Detailing of this structure was difficult, but a mention has to be made to the fabricating staff of Waiward Steel as this was an extremely challenging contract and much more difficult to fabricate than detail.
